Semonkong Lesotho
Chasing Browns in Semonkong, Lesotho Honeymoon
Tucked away in the mountain kingdom of Lesotho lies Semonkong, known as “The Place of Smoke”, named after the dramatic mist that rises from the famous Maletsunyane Falls. At the end of October, my wife and I chose this remote highland village for our honeymoon, trading in crowded beaches for clear rivers, crisp mountain air, and a chance to explore waters that still feels wild and untouched.
The drive-in set the tone for the next few days; Jimny packed fill with snacks, fly rods and two riding helmets. We crossed the border and started a slow cruise enjoying every twist and turn, every mountain and all the animals roaming around with the locals and their traditional Basotho blankets.
Arriving at the lodge, crossing the bridge got me itching to fish. I quickly rigged up the T50 tech 10 ft 3wt with a dry fly and the Diamondback 10ft 1wt with 2 small euro style jig flies. After 20min of fishing and a few fish on the board I was TOLD by the new missus it’s our honeymoon and not a fishing trip!!!
Over the three days I got 2-3hrs of good quality fishing every day. In between we hiked through the village and enjoyed some time away together. The fish were all in very great healty condition. Euro style fishing proved more productive with the windy conditions I was faced with, Silver beads never letting any angler down. The river above the famous falls holds only Brown trout, making it fun to focus on them and enjoy their fight and beauty.
Of course, I was lucky to convince the Mrs to choose this destination, so I had to dedicate sometime to her passion, which we both have in common, a honeymoon can’t be only about fishing as I was told. We traded rods for saddles and explored the highlands on horseback. Basotho ponies are famous for good reason, they’re steady, tough, and surefooted on terrain that would stop most horses. The rivers around Semonkong flow cold and clean, fed by high altitude springs and snowmelt. They’re the kind of waters that make every fly angler stop and stare.
For anglers looking to combine adventure, relaxation, and genuinely memorable fishing, Semonkong certainly delivers.
A Honeymoon to Remember!!! There are many ways to start a new chapter in life, but beginning ours with fly rods in hand, horses underfoot, and Lesotho’s mountains around us feels hard to beat. The peace, the trout, the people, and the landscape all came together to create something deeply memorable.
If you’re planning a trip, don’t overlook the highlands of Lesotho, it’s just around the corner, easy access throughout a few border posts, very easy to DIY
