Natal Scalie time!!!
It’s that time of year again, Natal scalies (yellowfish) are on the move, pushing up into the rapids and faster runs of KwaZulu-Natal’s river systems. With warmer days, clear water, and solid river flow, anglers across the province are enjoying some seriously exciting fishing action.
These strong, golden native fish are a true gem of our local waters. They are part of the Labeobarbus genus and are endemic to the region, meaning they occur nowhere else in the world. Known for their agility, speed, and striking golden hues, scalies thrive in clean, flowing rivers with rocky substrates and well oxygenated water. Their presence is often a sign of a healthy aquatic ecosystem.
Pound for pound, they’re among the hardest-fighting freshwater species you can target on fly. Their quick takes and spirited runs offer an exciting challenge, especially on light tackle where skill and finesse are key. They’re also a great species for sight fishing when the conditions line up, often found holding in the seams of currents, behind boulders, or cruising the shallows in search of nymphs, larvae, and aquatic invertebrates.
Right now, conditions are close to perfect for scalie fishing. Whether you’re on the Tugela, Umkomaas, Mooi, or exploring one of KZN’s many tributaries, you’ll find fish feeding actively, often in surprisingly accessible stretches of river.
Scalie Setup Tips:
- Rod: 1–3 weight
- Tippet: 5X or 6X
- Flies: #16 or #18 nymphs with copper or silver beads (2.5–3.5mm)
- Technique: Long, accurate drifts with a natural presentation are essential
Scalies often feed in groups, so when you find one, there’s a good chance more are around. It’s not unusual to rack up big numbers when the conditions are right. Their aggressive, yet sometimes subtle, takes demand attention, making every drift a potential adrenaline hit.
Get out there and enjoy what our KZN rivers have to offer. These fish are native, beautiful, and full of fight!!!
